Lessons learned from the summer of the Unified Grand Prize of 2021
The summer event of the Unified Grand Prix 2021 served as the last qualifying opportunity for the summer of Proving Grounds. Ten places at the summer event of 16 Proving Grounds teams already decided before this tournament. The six best teams of the Academy and the four best AMATEUR equipment of the level 2 circuit were automatically classified. In this event, the last four teams of the Academy and the 12 best remaining amateur teams fought for the remaining six places.
This is what we learned from the final tournament before the NA amateur championships.
Clg Academy does not reach the summer of Proving Grounds
As of 2021, Riot Games has endeavored to help close the gap between the amateur scene and the teams of the Academy. But theoretically, the best amateur talents would continue to be on the teams of the Academy. Although there have been amateur equipment that has made it better than the teams of the Academy, all the teams of the Academy at least qualified for the first Academy / Amateur Championship, the Spring of Proving Grounds. Ten of the 16 teams at that event were the ten teams B of the League of Legends Championship series. However, in the summer of Proving Grounds that number will only be nine.
The team of the Counter Logic Gaming Academy has had great problems throughout the year. Even during the Spring Division, CLG.A ended eighth in the Academy season and then proceeded to be eliminated early in the Unified Grand Prix 2021. CLG.A Tournament needed the last ranking opportunity to participate in the spring event of Proving Grounds. But this time there was no security network.
The summer tournament Unified Grand Prix 2021 determined what six teams would be classified for the summer of Proving Grounds. The 16-team tournament had the last four teams of the Academy, since the other six were automatically classified. TSM, Golden Guardians and Dignitas made their Academy teams do it well at the Summer Event of UGP. Clg.a suffered an early defeat before Zoos Gaming on the winning side of the painting and then lost immediately before Supernova in losers. Clg.A ended in ninth place, ending his season.
For the first time, a team of the Academy has not been classified for the main event of Proving Grounds.
The University of Maryville almost became the first university team in qualifying for Proving Grounds
Outside the Academy and the Amateur scene, the university scene is the third pillar in the ascent talent circuit, but it is often ignored. Good players have gone from the university scene to the professional scene and have successful races, but when it comes to competing, the university scene has often been the third wheel.
Colleged teams have been competitive against other parts of the amateur scene. But they have not been consistent enough to deserve attention. Although many people know that the University of Winthrop and the University of Maryville have been at the top of the university mountain, none of the two qualified for the spring of Proving Grounds. Winthrop, University Champion of 2021, was at a series of qualifying for the invitation of 16 teams in the spring, but it was not enough. In the summer, Winthrop did not even try to qualify, but the finalist of the University Championship, Maryville, did.
In the Summer Event of the UGP, the University of Maryville entered as the eighth head of series. They made a little surprise against the seventh sown AOE Randoms in the first round. After losing to TSM Academy, Maryville was paired with the AMATEUR TSM team in the group of losers. After a quick victory for 2-0, a victory against the ninth Supernova series head would give them their first birth in a field of testing in the history of League of Legends University. Unfortunately, they could not do it. Supernova won the 2-0 series.
As Winthrop in the spring, Maryville was only a series to compete in Proving Grounds. Even though both teams were short, the university scene is at a surprising distance to make noise at the American amateur circuit.
The computers from the lower level academy are still better than amateur medium-level equipment
It makes sense that the best players of the amateur teams are on the academy lists. That is because the LCS teams resort directly to their amateur teams in search of talent. However, in the spring of Proving Grounds, it was shown that the best teams at the Amateur scene were not necessarily the teams of the Academy. An amateur team, no org, won the Provening Grounds Spring event. His victory further boosted the narrative that not all the best players are in the Academy. Upon entering summer, all eyes were put on the teams of the academy who felt embarrassed in the spring. In the first tournament that mixed Academy teams and amateur equipment, the Summer Event of the UGP stopped the Bleeding of the Academy.
The six teams who attended Proving Grounds Summer from this event were divided. Three teams from the academy and three amateur equipment. However, the three teams of the Academy swept the podium.
Zoos Gaming, the amateur team that obtained the best position in the Summer Event of the UGP, caused the teams of the Academy for their money. They took TSM and gold guardians to the final situations of the game. But in general, the teams of the lower level academy surpassed the amateur teams at the middle level.
