Chinese developers are worried about Steam s potential version only in China

It is a secret for anyone that the Communist Party in China is not exactly the most welcoming to the idea of freedom of expression or freedom. The China People s Party has been accused of many human rights violations over the years and it seems that this trend is not going to stop soon. There has been a huge repression against external media companies like Google, YouTube and Facebook in China and have all been replaced by state-run alternatives. However, Steam has managed to become the exception and always operates in China so far. But it is difficult to predict what the Chinese government views will look like in the future. To work around this problem, Valve plans to create a Steam version only in China. This new steam has many Chinese nervous developers.

Many Chinese developers now fear that a new steam only in China leads to huge loss of income. China has the world s largest potential market because of its immense population, but the strict video games and media laws could make it more difficult for native developers to really benefit.

Chinese Steam Explained

The new steam only in China will be launched with a meager 40 games. The lack of content is due to the draconian laws on the censorship imposed by the CPP. On the other hand, the Steam to which the rest of the world will have access to more than 30,000 games.

It s hard to say what will happen in the future. Valve seems to be engaged in this new project despite the controversy that surrounds it. China and video game companies faced beforehand and it does not seem that it will be the last time either.
